One of the drawbacks of modern technology is the way it allows us to remain in a digital version of our own territory even when we’re elsewhere on the planet. I was reminded of this last week while on vacation with my father, brother and brother-in-law in Amsterdam — the one in the Netherlands, not the one in Montgomery County.

In Amsterdam, the customer is almost always right. That attitude — which extends to the totally licit market in prostitution and psychedelic consumables — has been in place at least since the 17th century, when the city’s merchant houses built the nation’s trade networks into a global force.
It was Dutch cash that funded Henry Hudson’s 1609 voyage up the Hudson to the present site of Albany, a mission that led to the creation of New Amsterdam, now known as Manhattan.
