AMSTERDAM (AP) — The Dutch government said Friday it would move to classify high-potency marijuana alongside hard drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy, the latest step in the country’s ongoing reversal of its famed tolerance policies.
The decision means most of the cannabis now sold in the Netherlands’ weed cafes would have to be replaced by milder variants. But skeptics said the move would be difficult to enforce, and that it could simply lead many users to smoke more of the less potent weed.

The ongoing Dutch crackdown on marijuana is part of a decade-long rethink of liberalism in general that has seen a third of the windows in Amsterdam’s famed prostitution district shuttered and led the Netherlands to adopt some of the toughest immigration rules in Europe.
The number of licensed marijuana cafes has been reduced, and earlier this year the government announced plans to ban tourists from buying weed. That has been resisted by the city of Amsterdam, where the marijuana cafes known euphemistically as “coffee shops” are a major tourist draw.

But Gerrit-Jan ten Bloomendal, spokesman for the Platform of Cannabis Businesses in the Netherlands, said implementing the plan would be difficult “if not impossible.”
“How are we going to know whether a given batch exceeds 15 percent THC? For that matter, how would health inspectors know?” he said. He predicted a black market will develop for highly potent weed.

Pollsters meet in Amsterdam

Last week’s annual conference of the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR), hosted by the University of Amsterdam, was memorable for us from Social Weather Stations.
Tourists will find that prostitution is legal; the formally-named Red Light District is well-marked on street signs.  Starter kits for growing cannabis are on sale in the flower market.  Museums told us that Rembrandt was a well-paid celebrity, whereas poverty-stricken Van Gogh was dead by suicide at 37.  I missed the tour by canal, alas, so that I could do last week’s column.
The welcome reception was held at the historic Oost-Indisch Huis (East India House) of the Dutch East India Company, established in 1602.  The company was located here until its bankruptcy in 1798, when it passed to the Dutch government.  I think that Multatuli (pseudonym), author of the 1860 best-seller “Max Havelaar” that inspired Jose Rizal, according to John Nery, and fueled the movement that eventually ended Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia, must have been here, since he had been an employee of the colonial service.

Supermodel Lara Stone repped hard for her home country of The Netherlands in a recent T Magazine interview, demonstrating her comprehensive Dutch-ness throughout. When discussing the notorious cultural capital of Amsterdam, for instance, she fully endorsed the two vices the city is best known for: marijuana and legalized prostitution.

This one, she probably could have phrased better. I agree with her that it’s important to have the sex industry be legal and regulated, but it’s not like the prostitutes in Amsterdam have zero problems to deal with. And I realize that the “they get more benefits than I do!” part is supposed to be a joke, but a fabulously wealthy supermodel complaining about the benefits doled out to prostitutes (many of whom are from poor countries) is kind of a bad look. So I guess this statement is half-decent?

Labelled as one of the world’s top models, Stone confesses that while she was growing up in the Dutch town of Mierlo she would smoke a lot of pot.    
‘That’s why I can’t remember so much. But really it’s just a plant,’ said the model.
In the Netherlands – Stone’s home country – cannabis is legal, and licensed cannabis coffee shops like those in Amsterdam are a popular tourist attraction.
While talking in the Sun about her journey from the Netherlands to becoming one of the biggest paid models in the world, Stone also joked about Amsterdam prostitutes saying they have great social care.
‘They get more bloody benefits than I do. The women are their own bosses.

Prostitution Takes Off At Dutch Airport Thanks To Cheap Air Travel

AMSTERDAM – With the prospect of duty-free shopping, casino gambling and upscale restaurants, Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has always had plenty to offer the weary traveler.
However, a new pleasure is on offer to those waiting to board flights, according to De Telegraaf, which reported Friday that a fleet of prostitutes has touched down.

They “can earn lots of money, much more than in their own countries,” the Amsterdam Prostitution Association told Radio Netherlands.

Located a 20-minute drive southwest of Amsterdam, it is the main airport in the Netherlands and is Europe’s fifth largest, with around 45 million passengers passing through each year.

We take care of nigerians here, even those in detention. Right now,we are working with relevant authorities here to come up with a programme on skill aquisition for Nigerian detainees,so that when they leave detention they would have got skills.

Cheap flights allow for prostitution at Amsterdam airport
A large number of budget flights from Eastern Europe and other parts of the world to the Netherlands has created a ring of prostitution at Amsterdam airport, giving a new meaning to the word layover. Prostitutes are flying into
Schiphol Airport and using the hotels in the international transit area to meet with clients without going through customs, often making a hefty profit even after “commuting” on cheap flights into Amsterdam.
Prostitution is legal in the Netherlands, and though what is happening in the airport is unregulated and thus technically illegal, Dutch police have no plans to stop it unless they receive specific complaints. The Amsterdam Prostitutes Association is also fine with the ad hoc red-light district as long as the women are doing it on their own accord and there is no human trafficking.

A report on IrishTimes.com says that not only has an unofficial red-light district popped up at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, but also that Dutch police have no plans to do anything about it. While prostitution is legal in the Netherlands, what is happening at the airport is illegal because it is unregulated. An investigation revealed that women, mostly from Eastern Europe, have been taking advantage of cheap airfare to the Netherlands and meeting with clients in the international transit area of the airport, so that they can avoid going through as many customs or security checks. Some of these women apparently make the trip every day.

The Amsterdam Prostitutes Association supports the business at the airport so long as there are no cases of human trafficking. “We do have a problem if they are being forced to work there by a pimp,” said a spokesperson for the organization, citing prostitution under duress as a huge problem in the region. Dutch police say they will not interfere unless they begin to receive complaints.

AMSTERDAM BROTHELS HAVE TO CLOSE AT 10 P.M.
AMSTERDAM, 21/07/11 – The brothels in the famous Amsterdam Red Light district De Wallen must in future be closed after 10.00 p.m. The sex business owners have lost their appeal against the decision of the city council to introduce the closing times.
For 40 years, it was tolerated that brothels, peep shows and sex shops in the Red Light district could stay open until 2.00 a.m. At the beginning of the current year, however, the city council decided that the Shop Opening Times Act had to be enforced ant all sex shops had to close at 10.00 p.m.

In Alkmaar, north of Amsterdam, 92 prostitute windows have to close permanently. They are all owned by businessman Koos Nool. The Council of State ruled yesterday that Mayor Piet Bruinooge correctly refused him a new operating licence in 2008.
